Zhibao 直報

The Tianjin daily Zhibao was founded in January 1895 in Tianjin by the German businessman and military advisor to Li Hongzhang Constantin von Hanneken (1854-1925). Together with the Shibao 時報, published by the influential Tianjin Commissioner of Customs Gustav Detring (1842-1913) from 1886 to 1891, which is also in our institute, the Zhibao was one of Tianjin's earliest Chinese language newspapers. During the year 1895, the Zhibao under its Chinese editor Yang Yinting 杨荫庭 rallied for the war faction in the Chinese-Japanese war and served as an early forum for the post war reform movement in Northern China. Yan Fu published some of his articles in the paper before he founded his own Guowenbao 國聞報 in 1897. The Zhibao closed down in 1904, when Yuan Shikai banned all sales outside the foreign concessions.

Our institute holds a paper reprint of this newspaper for the years 1895 to 1896 (24 Jan. 1895 - 5 Sept. 1896; N=19.9.1895 - 17.10.1895, 14.3.1896 - 12.4.1896) and 1898 (21.4. - 13.10.1898, incomplete), as well as several numbers from the years 1899, 1901, and 1904.

Thanks to Elisabeth Kaske for the above introduction!
