Not so long time ago it was a common practice to make "camera
ready" books from a typewriter script with symbols "painted in"
by hand and also "they" don't seem to care.  Check Springer
yellow series, for example, but far from only.  It is not so
common nowadays, so maybe somebody did care after all?
