Not really, but tabularx has to play this game a lot

% Added at v1.05: dissable "\write"s during a trial run.
% Since v1.05 reset all \LaTeX\ counters, by executing "\TX@ckpt".

Not entirely successful as I recall, but it hasn't had too many 
complaints in practice.
