Re-reading the LuaTeX manual, I may have got the name wrong here, sorry. 
I think it should be :n, with explanation that expansion takes place at 
shipout. However, I'd appreciate some input from a Lua expert: any 
takers? (I'm not 100% clear from reading the manual, I'm afraid.)
