and the good news is that the tests now run through and only show expected
behavioral changes - the bad news being that this is probably too good to be
true :-) i.e., that we don't test all aspects

so good job your reimplementation and we should prceed to discuss the merrits
of the changes (including interface changes further). Unfortunately I have to
attend some meetings now and can't do that right away
