The other side of the story is that LaTeX3 should be as compatible as  
possible using both XeTeX *and* LuaTeX, and their capabilities vary  
quite a bit.

So the aim at the moment is to build a system that relies only on e- 
TeX as a base system -- and we'll see what the future brings :)
