Nobody said that you are stupid. And I'm sure nobody thinks so.

But as Joachim already said, spaces are processed by TeX before macros
are expanded.

You said that you have beginners in mind. The last nine years I had
been at the university each evening after work and I've seen many
"LaTeX beginners".

Believe me, I know where beginners have problems. Noone had problems
with spaces, they can use any feature described in a book.

The only problems I've seen are:
    1. They use the wrong books (describing LaTeX 2.09)
    2. They do not read error messages.

Once someone who never heard about TeX before asked me how to write a
letter under Linux and I said: "use LaTeX". It was about midnight and
I couldn't give him any hints. When I came back the next day (I
expected to be killed), he proudly presented his letter and I was a
bit amazed to see the crown from the chess font properly centered
above his name. Not bad for a "beginner".

Regards,
  Reinhard

Microsoft isn't the answer. Microsoft is the question, and the answer is NO.
