100 Chinese Counties and Towns

The library has recently acquired a 100 volume series of socio-economic surveys called:
ZHONGGUO GUOQING CONGSHU - BAI XIAN SHI JINGJI SHEHUI DIAOCHA
(Beijing: Zhongguo dabaikequanshu chubanshe). Main editor: Ding Weizhi; ISBN: 7-5000...; LCC: HC428...

These cheap (20-40 yuan) blue paperbacks were published in the 1990s and are still available, most of them have 500-700 pages. In contrast to the production of many local histories, this was a centrally organised project initiated by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS); economic and social aspects are
emphasized, local history is less important.

Counties and towns in all provinces and autonomous regions (except HK and Macao) are covered, including
counties like Baxian, Meixian und Quxian
cities like Baoding, Lianyungang, Shaoxing, Yan'an, Zhucheng, Zunyi,
cities in minority areas (Baotou, Lhasa, Shihezi),
  special economic zones (Xiamen, Zhuhai)
as well as districts of the major centres: Haidian/Beijing, Huangpu/Shanghai, Jinghai/Tianjin, Shapingba/Chongqing.
These are case studies of slightly less than 5% of the 2200+ administrative units of the county level; most of the provincial capitals are not included.

Most volumes have chapters on politics, society, culture and the economy, as well as special topics (zhuanti diaocha); the Haidian volume includes chapters on intellectuals, urbanisation and new technologies, the Xiangtan volume information on Mao's home Shaoshan and some factories.

These volumes are not only useful for studying particular counties but also for North-South and East-West comparisons; in some cases, comparisons of the situation in the 1990s with earlier surveys of the 1920s and 1930s are possible.

Some of the areas included here (for example Songjiang/Shanghai, 1995, ISBN 7-5000-5310-X) were also covered by recent local histories (Songjiang xianzhi, Shanghai renmin chubanshe, 1991, ISBN 7-208-01061-7).

For those interested in ALL counties we also have:
ZHONGGUO XIANQING DAQUAN
in six large volumes with more than 7000 pages, Beijing: Zhongguo shehui chubanshe, 1993, ISBN: 7-80088-206-3; 600 yuan.
