New in the Digital Archive of Chinese Studies: Chatroom Discussion on
Zhao Ziyang's Death

Internet reactions to the death of former CCP general secretary Zhao
Ziyang have been mixed. Apparently, the government has worked hard to
mute dissident voices; thus, major BBS like the "Strong Nation Forum"
run by the People's Daily have remained silent. Another popular BBS
posted the official Xinhua announcement under the headline: "Zhao Ziyang
has died - please do not comment." Within 24 hours, the posting had been
visited almost 6,000 times, but nobody replied (or replies were
immediately deleted; the website in question has since gone offline for
server maintenance).

Smaller websites, and Weblogs in particular, however, have defied the
government's anxiety, and have turned to discussing Zhao's death.
The Digital Archive of Chinese Studies (DACHS) has downloaded a snapshot
of one such discussion, which is available at

The original posting was deleted after two days and is no longer
available at the original URL.
