New in IGCS - News Media (revised entry):

Xingdao dianzi ribao P ®q ¹q¤l¤é³ø (Sing Tao Electronic Daily)

Ed./Corp.: Sing Tao Newspaper Group, Hong Kong
URL: http://www.singtao.com/
Language: Chinese (Big5).
Description: Launched in 1938, the Sing Tao Daily has become the flag-ship
publication of the Sing Tao newspaper group, an international publishing
concern serving Chinese readers in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, America,
Europe and Australia. The electronic edition is on the net since August
1995. The European edition is available at http://www.singtaoeu.com/. "As
with other medium-sized mainstream newspapers, the Sing Tao Daily has been
facing growing difficulties over the past two years, particularly as its
market share has been eroded by the two mass-market dailies, the Oriental
Daily News and Apple Daily. According to a February SRG Media Index Report,
the Sing Tao Daily’s average daily readership had almost halved from
218,000 at the end of 1996 to 120,000 in February 1998. The current
economic crisis has also taken its toll." (Hong Kong Journalists
Association [ed.]: "Questionable Beginnings. A report on Freedom of
Expression in the Hong Kong SAR one year after the change of sovereignty."
