The reason for overloading the fontdimensions instead of assigning higher fontdimensions was efficiency. The tfm file format cannot handle a sparse array of fontdimensions, the tfm files are filled with explicit zeroes for all unspecified fontdimensions, if you leave holes in their sequence.
