If I understand this correctly, I'm kind of glad (relieved!) to hear this---just helped my wife w/ a project where I had to get equations and parts of equations to line up throughout a chapter, and I finally arrived at a pretty hairy set of equation environments filled w/ boxes of known sizes to make things work (and a set of m-environments to adjust for when there was a minus sign 'cause that's wider than a number :( My inference from the above statement is that there wouldn't've been a nice, elegant solution to this, and that it's a good thing that I stopped looking for one and just whacked at things until they fell into place?
