I think besides the implementation issues, it would be very useful if there would be a document of the sort "Preparing articles for direct electronic submission" as a standard reference. Individual publishers could contribute short appendices for those requirements that are unique to their journals. Could someone put a draft (if it exists) on the web, so that it will be possible to make concrete suggestions? I would be very willing to help out in this respect, either by sending in comments or by co-ordinating some of this. "William F. I think that the usefulness to effort ratio did not really convince people to commit to this... On the other hand, the submission guidelines could be drafted under the assumption that the back-end is not necessarily LaTeX, and thus the file should be processable as good as reasonably possible by filters that do not operate on the level of TeX.
