---------------------------------------------------- ChinaResourceNews No.12 (16 Dec 2002) http://listserv.uni-heidelberg.de/archives/chinaresource-l.html ---------------------------------------------------- * Sorry for any crosspostings * The Institute of Chinese Studies, University of Heidelberg, cheerfully announces the publication of the "Electronic Index to the Early Shenbao (1872-1895)", a cooperative project made possible through the financial support of the Thyssen foundation. The main objective of this database-project is to provide quick access to the contents of the Shenbao, certainly the most important of the early Chinese-language Shanghai newspapers, and thus contribute to the study of the late Qing press as well as to the paper's exploration as a source for historical and cultural studies. The index covers the years from the paper's foundation in 1872 to the end of the Sino-Japanese war in 1895. It consists of: - an English-language day-by-day record of the subjects treated in the paper's main articles (all editorial articles are included, a large part of them with titles in pinyin transcription, fewer with Chinese characters), - nearly all articles reprinted from the Hong Kong press (among them more than 240 items reprinted from the Xunhuan Ribao during the years 1874 to 1879 and fewer items from the Jinshi Bianlu or the Zhongwai Xinwen), - a selection of news reports, official documents, letters to the editor, etc., - all the zhuzhici (a form of popular poetry describing local customs), and - the names of the authors of signed articles. The index now consists of nearly 10,000 entries. The online-publication of the Shenbao-Index marks the completion of the first stage of this project. The further development and improvement of this body of data depends on the cooperation of future users of the database. Therefore we sincerely hope for contributions in the form of comments, using the comment-function, which has been implemented for this purpose. Besides direct comments on a given entry, you might contribute more detailed information on the contents and the historical and discursive context of single articles, references to translations that might exist or scholarly articles dealing with the specific topic treated in a given article. Contributions will be integrated into the database by the administrator and the contributors will be duly acknowledged. Thus the future development of the database will not proceed in a systematic way, but follow the specific interests of those working with the Shenbao-materials. You can access the database either via the Shenbao-Homepage http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/database/shenbao/manual.htm or via the database catalog of the Heidelberg Institute of Chinese Studies http://www.sino.uni-heidelberg.de/database/shenbao/.
