Self description: "The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection focuses on rare 18th and 19th century North and South America cartographic history materials. Historic maps of the World, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. The collection categories include old and antique atlas, globe, school geography, maritime chart, state, county, city, pocket, wall, children and manuscript maps." Description: As of Feb 2002, the collection contains some 6500 maps. The collection can be searched by country, state, publication author, keywords, or any other data field from the metadata records. Maps are presented in various resolutions, depending on how far you zoom in. Each map is accompanied by a set of metadata including bibliographical information as well as very knowledgable descriptions of each item. A quick search on China found 14 maps (oldest: 1747, most recent: 1922), all from Western origin. Additional maps are available on: China/Burma; China/India; China/Japan; China/Kazakhstan; China/Korea; China/Mongolia; China/Taiwan; China/Thailand (one to several maps each). Facit: A highly professional site managed by a team of experienced map bibliographers. Note: The site offers access via Insight" Browser for standard Web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. For professional functionality additional software (Insight" Java Client) can be downloaded freely.
