The Institute has acquired a copy of an unpublished novel from the Cultural Revolution period, Jiuji lang 九极浪 (The ninth degree wave) by Bi Ruxie 毕汝协. Written in Beijing in 1970, it has never been published - probably because of its explicit treatment of a major taboo theme of the time, sex - , but circulated widely in manuscript form.

The Institute has a copy of what survives of the author’s handwritten text. He had buried the manuscript in the Yihe yuan in Beijing to preserve it from possible police raids. Most of it was kept intact, but some parts got wet and rotted away, among them the first page as well as the end. The unearthed incomplete manuscript is now in Peking in the Zhongguo xiandai wenxue guan.

The author is living in the US today.

Rudolf G. Wagner
