This was rejected... I'm so dejected... I hope this isn't now a dupe,
or am I some kind of dope?.

The chapter was one explaining how to work out square roots, and it had
displayed fractions w/ varying numbers of digits, and I was trying to
get (say) a three digit fraction on the first page lined up with a four
digit fraction w/ two blank columns after it on the last page,
something like:
1 2 3
Completed root x -----
4 5 6
(many intervening pages w/ similar alignments)
7 8 9 0
Extracted root y -------
1 2 4 5
1 2 3 4 5 6
Completed root -----------
7 8 9 0 1 2
Notice how the last column of the ``Completed root'' lines up (at the
page margin) for both.
If amsmath align offered a way to do that, I couldn't find it :(
