Adding the above gives me a slightly more compact and slightly "darker"
font both in dvi and the printout.  The only problem is that this new
font is even more "beautiful" than the one that was previously used. 

I think that what I am trying to achieve is something that would look
like it was born in MS Word or one of its OSS clones rather than in a
printer's shop. 

How does this work?  I mean.. it's a bit surprising that requesting
what would appear to be two maths package should result in a font
